The lungs contain millions of alveoli, which are thin-walled air sacs. These alveoli create an extensive surface area for gas exchange. The large surface area significantly enhances the efficiency of gas exchange. For instance, if all the alveoli from both human lungs were to be unfolded, they would cover approximately 80 square meters—roughly the size of a tennis court.
